Ports operator DP World was expanding its facility at London Gateway by adding a new 25,800m2 dock area.

The project

McLaughlin and Harvey were carrying out the backfilling of the new dock area within the Corringham port for the offloading of shipping containers. This involved the placement of 233,280m3 of granular material which then required improvement using Vibro compaction to meet end product specification requirements.

The challenge

The site was in the tidal zone of the River Thames and the majority of the treated area could only be compacted while under water. This also led to a split-level site and no access to the treatment area using our plant.

The solution

Vibro compaction was carried out using S Pokers brought over from our sister company Keller Germany. These were then hung, with extensions, from cranes in excess of 380 tonnes to enable a reach of 40m out into the River Thames. The compaction points were located using an innovative GPS system fitted to the crane mast. Extensions installed onto the Vibro pokers enabled treatment depths in excess of up to 23m to achieve the engineering requirement of 80% relative density.
